Le B-24 Liberator - type H-20-FO s/n 42-94962 - NB # I "962" - s'écrase à Ercheu le 25 mai 1944 lors d'une mission de bombardement sur Belfort (France).
Le quadrimoteur appartient au 67th Bomber Squadron du 44th Bomber Group de la 8e AF. Il est abattu par la flak et s'abat sur le territoire d'Ercheu, à 12 kilomètres à l'est de Roye (Somme).

Le MACR indique en partie qu’à 8 h 42, cet avion (962) a quitté la formation, a plongé raide avec le moteur n ° 2 mis en drapeau et le moteur n° 3. Il était apparemment sous contrôle et semblait se diriger vers la Suisse.

Les trois survivants.
Sgt. ANDERSON, mitrailleur de queue, fit la déclaration suivante : «Après avoir quitté la formation, nous avons volé un peu en essayant de décider quoi faire avec nos bombes. Nous avons finalement trouvé un grand espace ouvert et les avons laissés tomber. Nous avons ensuite discuté de ce qu’il fallait faire - aller en Suisse, qui n’était pas si loin ou tenter de revenir en Angleterre. «À ce moment-là, nous étions à environ 10 000 pieds à cause des deux moteurs en difficulté, mais nous avons pensé qu'avec de la chance, nous pourrions revenir à la base.
Nous avons volé à cette altitude parce que nous ne pouvions pas le faire plus haut car nous étions des cibles de choix pour les batteries de flak allemandes. Finalement, nous avons été frappés à nouveau par une batterie anti-aérienne, et cette fois je crois que c'était le nez du bombardier qui fut touché parce que l'avion a commencé à tomber immédiatement.
I’interphone étant hors d'usage, il était temps pour nous d'abandonner le bombardier. Je fus le premier à sortir, BROSE était juste derrière moi et STEBURG était le dernier. Mais à peu près au moment de sa sortie, il y eut une explosion et STEBURG fut gravement brûlé. Quant à moi, «Je me suis cassé la cheville lorsque j'ai heurté le sol, donc je n'ai pas eu la chance de tenter de m'évader.
Mais la dernière fois que j'ai vu BROSE, il se dirigeait alors vers une forêt. Nous étions dans la région de la Champagne, en France, à environ 100 kilomètres à l'ouest de Paris.
L'avion désemparé se dirigeait droit vers le sol, emportant avec lui le reste de notre équipage jusqu'à leur mort. Il a alors explosé et brûlé.
«STEBURG et moi fûmes internés au Stalag Luft IV jusqu'en février 1945. Je fus libéré le 12 mai (1945). Je n'ai jamais su ce qui était arrivé à BROSE et je fus heureux d'apprendre qu'il réussit à s'échapper.

Ce témoignage semble légèrement contredire celui de BROSE, qui lui, affirme bien que les bombes ont bien été larguées sur l'objectif.

Puis il fut pris en charge ensuite par M. ROTA de Beaumont-en-Beine (Aisne) avant dêtre confié à M. ROLAND de Villeselve (Oise) jusqu'à la Libération.

Témoignage du Sergeant William F BROSE, mitrailleur latéral droit, évadé.


On may 25th we started out for Belfort, France to bomb the marshaling yards. We had a bomb load of twelve 500 lbs of high demolition bombs. We were 150 miles inside of France when we lost the oil from N° 2 engine, and the pilot had to feather the prop. We lost altitude and came down 10,000 ft. We made it to the target, and drop our bombs. We started on our way back and was escorted by three Mustangs. We got as far as Erchy, France and there was picked up by Anti-Aircraft. We were hit rather badly, the ship went into a sideslip and then it straightened out. We opened the carera hatch and flames were coming through. The tail gunner bailed out, I followed, then the sperry ball gunner. When my parachute opened I saw particles of the plane coming down, as the ship had blown up in mid-air. Later I found out from the french underground that the town-people of Erchy, France had buried 7 of the crew. I had found out that sperry ball gunner had been captured immediately upon hitting the ground. I do not know what happened to the tail gunner. I spent three and one half (3 months 1/2) with the French Underground, and was liberated September 2nd, 1944.

Le 25 mai, nous sommes partis pour Belfort, en France, pour y bombarder le centre ferroviaire. Nous avions un chargement de douze bombes de 500 livres de bombes à forte démolition. Nous étions à 150 milles (240 km environ) à l'intérieur de la France lorsque nous avons perdu de l'huile du moteur n°2 et que le pilote a dû mettre l'hélice en drapeau. Nous avons perdu de l'altitude et sommes descendus à 10 000 pieds (soit 3000 mètres d'altitude). Nous avons atteint la cible et largué nos bombes. Nous avons repris le chemin du retour et avons été escortés par trois Mustangs. Nous sommes arrivés jusqu'à Ercheu, en France et là-bas, nous avons été atteint par l'Anti-Aircraft. Nous avons été assez durement touchés, l'appareil s'est déstabilisé et est parti en glissade latérale mais le pilote a réussi à le redresser. Nous avons ouvert la trappe de la caméra et des flammes sortaient. Le mitrailleur de queue a sauté, j'ai suivi, puis le mitrailleur de tourelle. Lorsque mon parachute s'est ouvert, j'ai vu des parties de l'avion descendre, car l'avion avait explosé en plein vol. Plus tard, j'ai appris alors que j'étais caché par les résistants français que les habitants d'Ercheu, avaient enterré 7 membres de l'équipage. J'avais découvert que le mitrailleur de la tourelle inférieure sphérique (ball turret) avait été capturé immédiatement après avoir touché le sol. Je ne sais pas ce qui est arrivé au mitrailleur de queue. J'ai passé trois mois et demi caché avec des Français de la Résistance et j'ai été libéré le 2 septembre 1944.
