Anyway on the 7th of March I was on #38. I rode with Chuck and we led second box. We followed the 322nd into Criel Railroad Yards near Paris and failed to bomb because of cloud cover. I saw the Eiffel Tower before we passed over the clouds and the famous city of Paris seemed to sleep beneath a blanket of clouds.. On May 10, I was scheduled with Capt. Hughes (Assistant Operations Officer 397th Group). We were on a wing and I was bombardier again. We hit the yards at Criel near Paris. It was my second trip to the target. The weather was bad over the channel and I thought for awhile that we would be forced to turn around but it cleared as we went deep into France. As we reached the I.P. and turned on to the target I saw the city of Paris for the second time. This time I saw a little more of it. It is spread far and wide with the Seine running through the center of town. We bombed our target in flights of six and our six missed. We were following thirty-six ships of the 387th Group and they did hit the target and started fires in the yards. To go back a moment, on the way in I saw an enemy fighter go down near Amiens Glisy airdrome. He was brought down by our spit escort and he went down in flames. On the way out we ran into a small barrage of very accurate flak near Grandvillers. No one was hit seriously, however. http://www.kathyamen.net/journal/index.htm |

Le 7 mars, je participai à la 38e mission. Je volai avec Chuck et nous menions le second box. Nous avons suivi le 322nd sur la gare de triage de Creil mais nous n’avons pas bombardé à cause de la couverture nuageuse. Le 10 mai j’ai été retenu par le Capitaine Hughes (officier assistant opérations du 397th Group). Nous étions dans une escadre et j’étais de nouveau bombardier. Nous avons touché les voies ferrées de Creil. C’était ma seconde mission sur cette cible. La météo était si mauvaise sur la Manche que j’ai pensé un instant que nous allions devoir faire demi-tour mais cela s’est éclaircit quand nous avons pénétré en France. En atteignant le Point Initial et en virant vers la cible, je vis Paris pour la seconde fois. C’est une grande ville très étendue avec la Seine qui coule au milieu. Nous bombardâmes la cible par groupe de six et le nôtre la manqua. Nous étions suivis par trente-six appareils du 387th Group qui touchèrent la cible et l’incendièrent. A un moment au retour je vis un chasseur ennemi descendre vers l’aérodrome d’Amiens-Glisy. Il fut descendu en flammes par les Spits de l’escorte. En chemin nous traversâmes un petit barrage de Flak très précis près de Grandvillers. Personne ne fut sérieusement touché cependant. |
